How and Why the War Began

The American War of Independence started as a war between Great Britain and their 13 British colonies in North America. The colonists were opposed to various taxes and laws they considered to be oppressive and illegitimate in this war (also known as the Revolutionary War). Representatives of the colonies were displeased because they felt the purpose of the colonies was to carve out a new society in the wilderness and they resented being under the control of the British, who were 3,000 miles away. The British, however, felt that the colonies were there mainly to provide raw materials to Britain and be consumers of the manufactured goods coming out of Britain. The resentment that built up became intolerable and in 1775, the first shots were fired in the American War of Independence.
